Supt Mazlan said rescue teams found 14 of the crew members in a life craft several meters from the burning tanker.
The captain of the tanker was found floating at sea soaked in oil. “We could not approach the tanker due to the intense heat. In fact we could feel the heat 5km away from the burning ship,” he said, adding that marine police and Marine Department officers have cordoned off the area to ensure safety for other passing vessels.
Thirteen of the rescued crew, who received outpatient treatment at the Port Dickson district hospital are now staying at a hotel here while three others have been admitted for smoke inhalation and minor burns.
Officials from the Chinese Embassy are assisting the authorities here.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's First Admiral Tan Kok Kwee said as at 11am the wheel room of the tanker was still burning.
The tanker which carried 58,000 tons of naftar oil from United Kingdom to Singapore collided with charcoal-laden M.V. Ostende Max which left Port Dickson heading for Singapore, he said.
